I was expecting a lot from Smak, but I came out disappointed. First of all, there was one floor that was not available as they were still rebuilding for a new expo. The remaining floors are not as big, but we still paid a whopping 12 euros per person.. reduce your entrance fee if you are rebuilding for an exhibition to get a fair price/quality ratio in my opinion. The worst thing that really annoyed me was the woman behind the counter. We were at the shop checking out the posters, and we opened up one as they were not visibly exposed somewhere. The woman came to us very annoyed that we need to pay for it as they cannot use it because it was touched by us.... What about books and all of the other things that people touch in the shop? Are you going to let them pay in case they touch a book? The woman was ridiculously behaving and disrespectful. Only for this I will not come back. This is not acceptable.

The covid instructions are clear, but the art isn't. I know that modern art tends to have the reputation of being difficult to understand, but this museum barely has any notice boards explaining the artist's visions. Modern art is art because an artist has a story behind it. It's not like a beautiful painting which can be appreciated on its own, you need the context. This is something this museum does not provide, or, at least not without a(n audio)tour.
Nice museum, although we were not really a fan of the exhibition on the ground floor. Exhibitions change regularly so check the website in advance.
the Municipal Museum of Contemporary Art - Ghent, is an awesome museum due to its variety of exhibitions. It's very low cost for students (1 euro) in comparison with all the different collections you are able to see. When you're done with your tour in the musea, you can also get a drink at the smak café.
Great morning activity on a cold winter day
SMAK is a must-visit spot whilst in Ghent. Treat yourself to a carefully curated variety of contemporary, and then wash it down with a lovely beer afterwards!
One of the best museums I've been to! I loved the art they had on display. Also, every first Sunday of the month is free to enter for Ghent residents!
I'm enjoyed of some incredible arts and the atmosphere of building. Also find some important art works.
