The sensor revolutionizes the diagnosis of sleep-disordered breathing. By measuring mandibular movements during sleep, the sensor offers a powerful solution to assess breathing efforts. This device is based on the simple principle resulting from direct observation of patients during sleep : 1) Particular kinetic types of lowering and raising movement of the mandible are characteristic of different sleep respiratory disturbances. 2) Lowering the mandible, during all sleep respiratory anomalies is proportional in degree to the effort produced by the thoracic cage. 3) Extensive and rapid raising of the mandible during respiratory arrhythmias corresponds to arousals of the central nervous system that directs resumption of air exchange and interruption of events.
