A must visit to truly understand the massive scale of artillery during the great war
like
Hill 60 was yet another battle during the battle of Ypres. The massive crater is said to be 15m deep and never been checked. They believe it holds hundreds of dead bodies!!!
The Caterpillar Crater was formed by the detonation of a massive mine by the Allies that had been laid directly under the German trenches in June 1917. Part of a whole series of mines that were blown simultaneously all along the German Front lines in this sector south of Ypres. It has been said that the blast of the mines going off was so powerful that it could be heard in London. The mines signalled the start of the Third Battle of Ypres, more commonly known as Passchendaele.
Amazing site ! God bless the Australian tunnellers may you rest in piece
Very hard to imagine the power of the explosion and the damage done. The pictures don't really give a realistic impression of the size of the crater.
Beautiful spot, quiet and very humbling to think what happed here. A must for future generations to see
Lovely place to walk very eerie because of the History
