Although missing a clock tower, it is worth a visit. It is huge church containing the relequis of St Waltrude. You can download a free tour guide giving you more background info.

Dear Bryony, I once again write to you on this platform. Did you find your own way here this time? I hope so. We have plans of visiting Belgium someday, and though Brugge is far north of here, I thought you might appreciate the patron of this beautiful church. She is known for freeing captives by paying their ransom out of her own pocket. I know you sometimes worry you'll have to do the same for me. Let's hope not. But if you do, we can expect a church to be erected* off the Kingsland road in your name. I did some Digging and found that a northern renaissance painter called Jan Provoost was born Upon this town. I liked these painting (attached) because Of their striking divergence from what we saw in Florence. Or Maybe they're not all that different and I've forgotten the Orwellian eyes and underworld serpents. I wonder, is it a little suffocating that I'm showing this kind Of interest in your interests? I'd understand if it is. I might be in Paris by the time you read this, in which case I am definitely missing you. Right now you are at a secret live show or back at home in bed. I am chipping away at my paper on sentimentality, thinking of you. I love you dearly. Harry xx P.S. The Saint Waltrude Collegiate Church is the magnificent building of Mons. Even from the outside, one can see the church is of Gothic design, although the southern section is covered in scaffolding due to restoration work. The Gothic design is much more obvious from the inside with straight lines of incredible height. Part of that is down to the hardness of the stone used and even now looks so solid. As you can guess from the name, the church is named in honour of Saint Waltrude, whose shrine and reliquary can also be found inside. Her head can be found in the chapel dedicated to her and the reliquary containing her body is held above the high altar for all to see. The church also has some chapels with important sculptures and paintings such as those by Jacques du Broeucq and Peter Paul Rubens. The chapel of Saint Peter is unexpected as it has a wooden sculpture of death to symbolically represent the passage of time, as well as an alabaster sculpture of Jesus symbolically handing over the keys of heaven to Peter. There's also a free downloadable audio guide, which is good enough to help you understand the history of the church as well as giving good commenter on all the chapels.

It is strange to find a chuch dedicated to a woman and in Mons we found it! The churc is very interesting with a chair used for a religious procession every year.
